The writing of this song began in 1994 and was completed in 2012. It was finally recorded in 2018. Then it was mixed and mastered in 2023.

On a hot summer day, Clara rode her bicycle to a park. There, under a tree where she was eating her sandwich, a flicker landed. The bird hopped around looking for her own lunch under the leaves and bits of tree bark. Both Clara and the flicker enjoyed about a half hour of each others’ company and at times were only a few feet away from one another. When it was time to go, the bird flew away and Clara rode back to work.

Since then, the flicker has been Clara’s spirit animal. The flicker also holds many sacred places in Native American stories. It is said to have powers over fire, is associated with friendship, and can bring healing. Hearing the loud call of the flicker means that you will receive a visitor. You can read more about the flicker bird here: www.native-languages.org/legends-flicker.htm

Casey and I have each found several flicker feathers over the years during our hikes out in the wild. Some of our findings are pictured in the album art.

Lyrics:
Hey this flicker doesn’t fly away
Oh I’d love to spend the day with her
With this in mind I should keep the time
As she spends it in her little way
No, no, no, no
Well maybe
Yes, yes, yes
I’m gonna take off my dress
Maybe put on even less
Oh I’d love to try and be with you
Will you teach me how to sing that song
I won’t ask you how to fly so free
Not unless you think I’m ready to
The sun is beating again
On my bare back
I’m losing skin
I’m getting thin
I will begin to be your friend
Here in the space of Love
Getting it down my blood
Facing my subtleties
Facing my subtleties
Oh the subtlety of love will hold you now
Oh the subtlety of love will give it to you
